Great Curassow, Crax rubra

Great Curassow
Female Great Curassows of the rufous morph can be seen on the lawns of Bosque del Cabo resort in the Osa Peninsula. These large birds of ancient lineage are normally secretive, inhabiting the forest floor and canopy of tropical rainforests foraging for fruit, so it is a treat to see and photograph them out in the open. The nearest relatives to the curassows are the chachalacas and guans, a family of birds represented in North America only by the Plain Chachalaca of South Texas.
