Hairy Woodpecker, male with food at nest, 5/5/08, Stevens Creek Park
Most of these pictures were taken in Stevens Creek Park, Spring 2008, at a nest which was very popular with local bird photographers.

Hairy Woodpecker, juvenile, 5/27/08, Stevens Creek Park
Here's the juvenile male looking out of the nest hole shortly before he fledged. Note the extensive red crown feather forward on the head; a female juvenile could have red feathers too, but they would not be as extensive or as far forward. Compare the adult male looking out of the same hole earlier, in the picture just below -- the adult male red patch is smaller and at the rear of the crown. The adult female, see above, has no red. The picture two down shows the contrast between the patches of the adult and juvenile male as the adult feeds the juvenile, shortly before fledging.
