above and below, the one below showing the "rhino horn," a light
vertical protusion from the bill. I've only seen these little
ocean-dwelling birds from boats at sea, which generally means less than
satisfactory images, but they do allow closer approach than their
relatives the Cassin's Auklet. |

![]() Above is a juvenile Rhinoceros Auklet, identified as a young bird by the dark eye and mostly dark bill. This bird stayed put when our boat approached, on the relatively smooth waters of protected Princeton Harbor. |
