| This male Rock Ptarmigan
still has all-white winter plumage, but it has the red
bare patch above the eye of the breeding adult male. The
bird shown below still has the all-black bare facial patch
of the non-breeding plumage. By contrast to the Willow
Ptarmigan, which is found near the stunted willows
characteristic of the tree line area, birds of this
species nest in barren rocky tundra. |
