Spotted Owl, Strix occidentalis

![]() This was one of two adult birds that roosted during the day right along the creekbed of Miller Canyon in southeastern Arizona, about a half-mile above Beatty's orchard, during early August 2008. The sleeping bird's right eye and bill are just visible in the picture. Difficult viewing conditions and dappled light made for a less-than-idea photo, but getting any picture of this species was a thrill; thanks to Tom Beatty, Sr., who allowed us access and gave good directions on how to find the bird. |
