Andean Condor, Vultur gryphus

Andean Condor
El Cóndor Pasa. We spotted this bird in the distance flying toward us, and she passed right over our awed little group of photographers along the road through Antisana Ecological Reserve high on the slopes of one of the volcanoes on the outskirts of Quito. These largest of flying landbirds are increasingly scarce in the northern Andes, with less than 100 individuals of the species thought to be in the wild in Ecuador; the species population as a whole is estimated at ten thousand or more, with most of them in Argentina and Chile.
